    • Between 1934 and 1940, Roger Vitter served on the naval ships Colbert and Jean Bart as well as on the submarine Thétis. He received the citation of the Order of the Brigade for his valiant efforts in the April-May 1940 operations in the North Sea, during which he spent more than 300 hours under water.

During WWII, he served in the F.F.I. of Doubs, S.R.D.2, Groupe M.L., Second Company. He received the following (translated) citation from General Koenig, Commander in Chief of the French interior forces, on 9/26/1944: "Taking part in the Resistance from the very beginning, Roger Vitter was an eager volunteer to transport arms, for dangerous missions, and for missions of sabotage. Scorning danger, he was constantly on the go, taking part both in combat missions in the areas of Clerval and Crossey le Petit as well as in enemy reconnaissance. After the liberation of Clerval, he worked on other reconnaissance efforts for the Army in dangerous regions. "

Avant et après le « Aha! moment »
Avant et après le « Aha! moment »
Before Jeff Vitter's Aha! moment described above, Jeff and his dad did not know much at all about where the Vitter line came from. Much correspondence behind the scenes — both electronic as well as old-fashioned hardcopy letters — led up to and beyond the big discovery. This history gives an inside look at the correspondences that genealogists engage in, the friendships that develop, and how what we understand grows (we hope!) with time.

This manuscript is a comprehensive and very entertaining account of the Vitter generations written by Jean-Pierre Vitter (Jeff Vitter's 4th cousin, 1x removed) in October 2002. It's easily translated, e.g., using Google Translate. The story starts with Jeff's 4th great grandfather Hérard Vitter, who moved from "l'Autriche Antérieure" to the town of Clerval in the Doubs region of France in the 1700s. Hérard's father in the old country was Mathieu Vitter, and his son Pierre is the one who emigrated from France to New Orleans in 1843. The big mystery that remained was exactly where Hérard Vitter came from originally. (See JPV's follow-on work, Le sang qui coule dans nos veines, for answers.)

As highlighted in "The Aha! Moment That Led to This Website," Jeff Vitter made a big breakthrough in December 2000 when he discovered when, where, and how his Vitter ancestors came from Europe to the USA. Much correspondence behind the scenes led up to and beyond that discovery. This history gives an inside look at the correspondences that genealogists engage in and how what we understand grows (we hope!) with time.
