NEBRASKA CITY - Mervin D. Nicolay, age 90, of Nebraska City, Nebraska died
Monday, March 22, 2004, at his home.
He was born August 9, 1913 in Osage County, the son of Alma and Olive Markley
Nicolay.
Mr. Nicolay was employed in the construction industry and worked on various
construction projects including buildings and road construction.
He was a charter member of the Wanamaker Woods Church of the Nazarene in Topeka,
and he loved to hunt and fish.
He married Nina Burch on November 27, 1954 in Angola, Indiana. She survives.
Mr. Nicolay was preceded in death by his parents, five daughters; Wanda Smith, Lois
Nicolay, Sue Svacina, Sonya Nicolay, and an infant daughter, two grandsons, three
brothers; Oliver Nicolay, Arnold Nicolay and Raymond Nicolay, two sisters; Opal Briggs
and husband Raymond, and Orgene Nicolay, and three brothers-in law; Tom Munday,
Elmer Gordinier and Paul Spinelli.
Other survivors include two sons; Marvin Nicolay and Mervin D. “Nick” Nicolay, Jr.,
both of Nebraska City, four daughters; Ellen Phelps (whose late husband was Don), of
Somerset, Kentucky, Louise Williamson and husband Ron, of Osage City, Edie Adams
and husband Dale, of Phoenix, Arizona, Georgia Bonnesen and husband James, of
Kingman, one son-in-law; Darreld Smith, of Topeka, one brother; Leonard Nicolay and
wife Ella, of Topeka, four sisters; Anabelle Munday, Oddilene Gordinier and Melba
Goodwin, all of Topeka and Betty Spinelli, of Los Alamos, New Mexico, twenty-six
grandchildren, twenty-seven great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 25th at the Wanamaker Woods
Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Dr. L.D. Holmes officiating. Burial will be in
Memorial Park Cemetery in Topeka. Mr. Nicolay will lie in state from 9:00 a.m. until
service time Thursday at the church where a family visitation will be from 9:00 to 10:30
a.m.
