- Daughter of Elizabeth & Jacob Mahr (both of German descent.) From a son's biography: In the summer of 1845, Philip, Mary, and their ten children started for their new home in Indiana in a covered wagon drawn by a team of oxen. It was necessary to cut their way through the woods in many places. The oldest children walked most of the way because there was not enough room for them in the one wagon. During their long trek the subsisted on corn bread and wild turkey.
