Bishop Christian Schmidt Miller (I52895)
1764 - 1845 (81 years)-
Name Christian Schmidt Miller [1] Title Bishop Relationship with Albert Leopold Vitter Birth 1764 Berks, Pennsylvania, USA [1] Gender Male LifeSketch "After the death of his mother, Christian was taken in to the home of Hans Beiler. Hans was a blacksmith by trade, and young Christian soon learned the trade and became quite proficient as a welder of iron and won for himself considerable popularity, and became known as Schmith (Smith) Miller. The old log cabin of Hans Beiler is still standing in Mifflin County, PA. After Christian attained the age of twenty one, he started to peddle notions for a living and traveled westward across the Allegheny mountains, until he reached Somerset County, PA. There he purchased a tract of land from the Shawnee Indians, consisting of about for or five hundred acres. Here Christian married a young girl by the name of Berkey, and proceeded to erect a cabin in the forests of Conemaugh Township, near Johnstown, PA. There were only four white families living in this township. Their structure was a rude cabin with a blanket hanging over the doorway. During their first summer in this cabin, they laid the foundation for a new home: a place where his ten children were born and grew to manhood and womanhood. On this farm Christian Schmith Miller built a blacksmith shop, and farmers came for miles to have implements built or repaired. While Christian was busy in the blacksmith shop, his wife took care of most of the chores, having to take a path through the woods for a great distance to take the cows to and from pasture, hearing the wolves howling and many times meeting up with some Indians in search of game. Christian Miller was the first Amish Minister and Bishop in Conemaugh Township, Somerset County, PA. Some of his children moved to Holmes and Tuscarawas Counties. Ohio. And several times he visited them riding on horseback over the mountains. He died on his farm in Pennsylvania in 1845, and is buried with his two wives on a hillside close by. Christian’s children are as follows: Henry, born May 10, 1785; Elizabeth, born May 26, 1787; Jonathan, born March 9, 1789; Solomon, born April 23, 1790; Fanny, born 1791 and died in 1860, she being married to Christian Wenger, they were the ancestors to most of the Hershbergers; Daniel, born August 26, 1793 died September 8, 1861 was married to Rebecca Kauffman...Other of Christian\'s children were Jacob, Barbara, Christian, and Magdalena. Of these I do not have their birthdates.\" -Miller Family History, published June 1977 FSID MY9L-LCC Name Smith Religion Amish minister and bishop, according to ML61* + Amish and Amish Mennonite Genealogies, 1986, page 312 Death 1845 Somerset, Pennsylvania, USA [1] Burial Miller Farm Cemetery, Somerset, Pennsylvania, USA [1] - also know as Abraham Miller (Henry W.
