Après le Aha! moment (et avant aussi!)
Après le Aha! moment (et avant aussi!)
As highlighted in the history "The Aha! Moment That Led to This Website," Jeff Vitter made a big breakthrough in December 2000 when he discovered when, where, and how his Vitter ancestors came from Europe to the USA. Much correspondence behind the scenes led up to and beyond that discovery, including new information about Jeff's mom's side of the family in southwest France around Uzan (pronounced "u-ZHANG" in the local patois) and Anères. This history gives an inside look at the correspondences that genealogists engage in and how what we understand grows (we hope!) with time.

• Name Marie Léocadie Péré [1, 2, 3
Suffix dite Cabaillé
Name Mimi
Notes
• (Marie) Léocadie Péré dit Cabaille was born in Anères, the department of Hautes Pyrénées (65), France, close to Lannemezan. The village is on the Neste River and is nearby the town of St. Barthe de Neste anda St. Laurent-St. Paul (aka St. Laurent de Neste) where there is a railroad station and hotel. Also nearby is the city of Montréjau, where there is a marketplace and nearby chateau, and the town of Tuzaguet, site of the family tomb. The former mayor of Anères is Mr. Azum.

The childhood house of Léocadie Péré is on the main road, on the outskirts of the village, on the banks of the Neste River. You need to cross a bridge to get there; a grain mill used to be a short distance away. (From notes by John Ferran, May 1, 1981.)

Léocadie took daughters Martha Ferran St. Raymond and Rose Ferran and Martha's five children on a trip to France in Summer 1934. First they went to New York, where her son Dr. John Ferran was living. He showed them around town, including the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Fifth Avenue, and the Bronx Zoo. They took the Champlain (French Line) to France, landing at Le Havre. They visited the family home of Léocadie, where Léocadie had some business to take care of. (Her mother Rose Ricaud Péré had died not long before, as had Léocadie's husband Jean Ferran, so perhaps the trip was to take care of some inheritance matters, perhaps selling some property.) They also visited Bordeaux, Biarritz, Hendaya (Spain), Lourdes and Paris. Audrey St. Raymond, one of Martha's five children, remembered that one of their favorite spots in Paris was called Pam-Pam, where they served American food such as hot dogs and hamburgers. They returned on the liner Ile de France from Le Havre around August 8, 1934.

• The wedding was recorded in front of the mayor of Lannemezan, Jean-Marie Ricaud, who is presumably the brother of Marie Rose. It was notarized by Brun of Campistrus. Also mentioned in the marriage contract were Lannemezan residents Guillaume Noguès (52-year-old farmer and presumably the brother of Marie Rose's mother Dominiquette), 30-year-old Danièl Cazayères, and 30-year-old Brandans.

Trip with Mimi (Léocadie Péré Ferran), Mémère (Marthe Ferran St. Raymond), Tawo (Rose Ferran), and Mémère\'s five children to France. They sailed from N.Y. on the ship Champlain (French Line) after spending a few days in New York City, where Uncle John Ferran showed them special sights (Broadway, Statue of Liberty, Fifth Avenue, Bronx Zoo, etc.). They landed in Le Havre and went to the southwest of France where Mimi\'s home had been. The trip was probably to settle financial matters after the recent June 1933 death of Mimi\'s mother Rose Ricaud Péré. They also visite Lourdes and Paris. In Paris, one of the kids\' favorite spots was an eatery called Pam Pam that served American food such as hot dogs, hamburgers, etc. They returned on the ship Ile de France.
