- John James Morgan John James Morgan was born March 31, 1852 in Shelby County, Illinois, and died January 20, 1932, Somerset, Miami County, Kansas. He was married January 9, 1871, to Lavinia Russell, born April 8, 1857 in Page County, Iowa, who died September 24, 1951, in Paola, Miami County, Kansas. Both are buried in Hodges cemetery, Miami County, Kansas. John James, familiarly called Jack, came to Kansas in 1869 with his parents, James and Margaret (Bridges) Morgan. He was a farmer and a blacksmith who followed both callings industriously. He eloped with Lavinia, daughter of Elijah and Fannie (Plank) Russell, in a covered wagon, crossing the state line into Missouri where they were married by a minister on horseback. They made their home in Louisburg for several years before moving to Somerset. To this union were born seven children: Fannie Alice, born October 22, 1871, died July 12, 1884, buried in Louisburg cemetery; Elnora (Pink) born March 26, 1879, never married, died June 14, 1953, buried in Hodges cemetery; John Henry,born June 9, 1885, married Mary Russell, July 8,1905, died December 9, 1980, buried in Hodges cemetery; Winifred, born October 15, 1889, married Walter Mitchell, December 27, 1915, died September 17, 1982, buried in Antioch cemetery, Kansas City, Kansas; Catherine, born March 17, 1892, married John Mann, September 11 , 1912, died March 25, 1969, buried in Wellsville cemetery, Franklin County, Kansas; Wilford (Jiggs) born September 7, 1896, married Hazel Clark, January 25, 1918, died November 19, 1967, buried in Paola cemetery; James Leary, born April 17, 1898, married Julia Fischell, November 13, 1920, died August 26, 1966, buried in Greeley cemetery, Anderson County, Kansas Submitted by Terry Grant--Swan River Museum Book of Family Histories and Stories of Miami County, Kansas. Obituary: John James Morgan: J.J. Morgan died at his home in Somerset Wednesday afternoon a 1 o'clock. He had been in very poor health for a long time. John James Morgan, son of James Marion and Margaret Morgan, was born in Shelby County, Illinois, near the town Windsor, March 31, 1852. He came to Miami County with his parents in 1869. So, he spent about 63 years of his nearly 80 years of life in Miami County where he was well and favorably known. Mr. Morgan and Lavina Russell were married January 9, 1871. To them were born seven children: Fanny Alice, she died July 12, 1884, at the age of 12; Elnora, of the home; J. Henry Morgan, Hillsdale; Winifred, now Mrs. Walter Mitchell, of Kansas City; Catherine, now Mrs. J. H. Mann, of Kansas City; Wilford Morgan, Paola; Leary Morgan, of Middle Creek Township. Mr. Morgan lived a long and useful life in this county and his widow and children have the sympathy of all who respect the memory of the husband and father. Funeral services for Mr. Morgan will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home conducted by Rev. Leonard N. Kent.
