      Important notes (kudos to Isabelle Simonin): The signature of witness and bride's father Claude Thouret matches his signature on the baptism/birth record of the bride (see baptism/birth source citation). This establishes the Thouret-Amiot couple who married in Moimay and had a daughter Claire Françoise is the same as this Thouret-Amiot couple in Petit Croisy whose daughter Claire Françoise was getting married to Jean Antoine Thiébaud.

      On Claire Françoise Thouret's marriage certificate, her brother Jean Claude is listed as a witness. There is a Jean Claude born to Claude Thouret and his first wife Jacques Antoinette Mourey. In Jean Claude's marriage certificate, the fact that Pierre Thouret is listed as an uncle of the groom indicates that the groom's father Claude Thouret was the son of Pierre Thouret and Marguerite Simonin (and not the son of Pierre Thouret dit Le Jeune and Anne Marie Pegeot) since the Thouret-Simonin family is the only one to have a son named Pierre still living in 1781. (The son Pierre in the Thouret-Pegeot family died in 1743.)

      This manuscript is a comprehensive and very entertaining account of the Vitter generations written by Jean-Pierre Vitter (Jeff Vitter's 4th cousin, 1x removed) in October 2002. It's easily translated, e.g., using Google Translate. The story starts with Jeff's 4th great grandfather Hérard Vitter, who moved from "l'Autriche Antérieure" to the town of Clerval in the Doubs region of France in the 1700s. Hérard's father in the old country was Mathieu Vitter, and his son Pierre is the one who emigrated from France to New Orleans in 1843.
