The marriage must have been elsewhere. A few years later his wife died and he remarried May 11, 1584, to Anni Biircki of Trimstein. The church record states that Jacob Kauffman was from Schopfen in the vicinity of Basel. Undoubtedly this refers to Schofheim, Baden, where the Kaufmann family had lived long before this time and no Schopfen being found in Switzerland at this early date. Jacob Kauffman or his son married Dec. 13, 1613, Verena Barb. Trimstein lies in the parish of Munsingen, two hours north of Steffisburg. The Kauffman clan includes the influential Mennonite teacher Täufer Isaac Kauffman (1653–1741) and his son Isaac Jr. (1685–late 1700s). Isaac Jr. immigrated with his family to Pennsylvania via Rotterdam on the ship Virtuous Grace in 1737.
