History of Cass County People, By Cass County Genealogical Society, Atlanta, Texas
James Alexander Rankin born in Lincoln, North Carolina, came to Texas with the Robert Beaty family and Louisa Rankin about 1860.
James was a carpenter before enlisting 1861 at Camp Reeves, Texas, in the Confederate Army. Promoted to 4th Sgt. 1862, serving at Camp Reeves, Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma, and Columba, Tenn., being paroled by U.S. Army 1865 at Marshall, Texas.
James married 1866 to Sarah Cloninger.
In 1872 James and brother-in-law W. B. Cloninger, bought 200 acres just west of Black Cypress Creek and northeast of Sardis Community. James brought Cloninger's half in 1876. His home was four rooms with a double fireplace (back to back) and a porch across the front.
James and Sarah had the following children: Zoe Maxvilla, Susan Justina, Robert Benjamin, Walter Dell, Alice May, and Samuel Lee.

Son of Samuel and Elenor (Elen) Alexander Rankin, James bonded to marry Polly Johnson 26 Aug 1812 in LIncoln County.
In 1814 Samuel Rankin willed his home on Dutchman's Creek to James; and, from that time, if not earlier, James and Polly Rankin lived in the Rankin homestead. There most of their nine children were born, eight living to maturity.
James may have been in failing health on 20 September 1832 when his second son Richard Johnson Rankin recorded the James and Polly family in his father's copy of Brooke's Gazateer, pub ___.
One week later, on 27 Nov 1832, James signed his will. It was probated in the Jan 1833 Session, Lincoln County Court.
